In my twenties, I believed I would be lithe, healthy and active forever. I assumed I could eat whatever I wanted, with no bad results. I did, too! I ate gobs of San Francisco sourdough bread, piled with butter or broiled with melted cheese. I ate ice cream and candy. I stayed a size 6 through my twenties and thirties. Then, corporate life slowed me down. I stopped playing softball, stopped running up and down San Francisco hills to get my French break. I sat in my car, in front of my computer and through long meetings. My body grew soft and I went up to a size 8. Still not too bad, but, now I had headaches and other complaints. I still took my health for granted. While I ate pretty well, I was not very conscientious about nutrition or exercise.
Early in my forties, now a mom and approaching a size 12, I realized I was blowing it. I had no energy, had a migraine every night, could not sleep, and was starting early menopause. I was miserable. Colds and flu were rampant in our household. My husband, kids or I would get them, and then pass them all around the family, back-and-forth for weeks. I decided I had to fix this and it started with me!
I began a nutritional supplement regimen, stopped eating junk-food and heavy starch-y foods like rice, pasta and potatoes. I began going to the gym at least three days a week. I also had to give up my beloved ice cream and cheese, as it was clear that dairy was really bad for me. It turned out to be the primary cause of my adult acne, among other things.
My body forgave me for the past neglect and responded magnificently! I lost 20 lbs., got rid of the migraines, restless leg syndrome, constipation and sleepless nights.
It has been more than fifteen years since I embarked on being consciously and conscientiously healthy. At 55, I have maintained my size 8, I sleep great, I have no aches and pains, and my skin is clear. I have the energy I had in my thirties. (I am working at getting to the energy I had in my twenties!)
I do not fear the cancer that runs throughout my parents’ families because I am actively pursuing a lifestyle that reduces the risk of getting cancer. If you are taking your health for granted, it is not too late! Choose to be healthy!
